Per Halkjær Nielsen is professor at the Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering at Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark. He has been working for 20 years with many aspects of wastewater microbiology, particularly related to revealing structure and function of the microbial communities in full-scale wastewater treatment plants. He has developed and applied many novel methods for ecophysiological studies. He is currently chairman of the IWA specialist group on “Microbial Ecology and Water Engineering” (former “Activated Sludge Population Dynamics”) and he is co-editor on two new books on “Microbial Ecology of Activated Sludge” and “FISH Handbook for Biological Wastewater Treatment”.
