We are very happy to note from the number of abstracts submitted that there is a large interest in the conference topics. Based on the submissions we intend to make two special issues for Water Research. Those invited for oral presentation will be directly asked to submit a paper for the special issue; all others are welcome to submit their paper to the special issue for review. The conference committee will act as special issue editors. We believe that these special issues will give a further push to the research on microbial ecology of urban water systems as well as to the research on integrated urban water management.
